Next-gen Dell XPS exposed

Details and photos of Dell's next-generation XPS 420 are finally availabe!. Engadget has posted pictures and specification about the up coming Dell XPS 420. The latest Dell desktop PC is more powerful than any of it's predecesors and packs some great features like Xcelerator transcoding processor for transcoding video streams to MPEG-4, but most importantly the XPS420 features a 3 x 2-inch Windows SideShow display.

Some details about the machine (SideShow display described below): This powerful new PC supports Intel Core 2 Duo, Extreme, or Quad Core (8MB L2 cache) processors and will be built on the up coming X38 Express chipset with up to 8GB DDR2 800 RAM, PCI Express x16, gigabit Ethernet, and SATA II architecture with RAID 0 or 1.

One of the interesting key is the so called MiniView display, an 3 x 2-inch color QVGA display on top of the system which also features multimedia controls. The TFT display is mounted at a smart 75 degrees, therefeore it can be used when the PC is under the desk. The SideShow compatible display does not sacrifice any drive bays, instead it is an an integral part of the front bezel. On the left side, this SideShow device also has 6 LEDs used for various status indicators.

It is a Windows SideShow LCD that supports several display modes such as time, date, month calendar, and basic system stats. It also support multimedia mode that allows you to control your multimedia folder ( control the access and playback of audio, picture and video files )

MiniView display modes

  • Default view: indication of current time and date, and also system parameters (including the number of connected users)
  • PC Monitoring: the detailed system statistics (CPU temperature, fans speed, available memory and other info)
  • Multimedia mode: control audio, video or picture mode.

Windows SideShow LCD supports several display modes like default (date, time, calendar, system statistics), system monitoring (CPU temperature and speed, RAM availability and fan speeds) and multimedia mode where it allows users to control the access and playback of audio, picture and video files.
